I was going to do a Going Up & Down list, but I found that I had so many photos of my family’s latest foraging activities that I decided to dedicate a whole post to these wonderful wild plums we found! My list will have to wait…
One of the great things about summer is the possibility of picking wild fruit, and if you have a mother like I do, who has a radar for fruit bushes within a 2 mile radius of her, then dog walks are a little bit like going to Tesco except you come out with a few more thorns sticking out of your palms and the fruit has no plastic packaging (bonus!).
While Seb & my mum de-stoned the plums, of which we picked three different varieties from about a single 100m stretch of bushes (but I’m not telling you where!!), I made crème patissiere and pastry so that we could have plum tarts! Simple, but definitely a good idea for the best, juicy red plums. With some of the others my mum has made jam. We picked soo many! It was hard to know when to stop picking!
These multi-coloured ones are so pretty! They’re like two-tone plums. I’m really pleased with the tarts, they are the perfect combination of colourful and rustic. We stewed the plums before spooning them onto the cooled pastry & crème. You could make it yourself with any fruits you like, or even a combination like I did here.
How do you like your puddings? I like mine cold, with cream. We always have this argument when someone puts the pudding in the microwave, while my dad & I shout in protest because we prefer ours cold. Or even, cold with hot custard. Perhaps that’s the best solution!
We also found wild mint… it smelt amazing! Truffle enjoyed her day too and decided that she likes plums. Though she has even more of a taste for wild duck.
Does anyone else like to forage? I was watching ‘Come Dine with Me’ earlier and one girl was cooking using food she found in skips! Perhaps this is a little more extreme, but it’s amazing what you can get for free.
