A few weekends ago I had the pleasure of leading a workshop, ‘An Introduction to Foraging’ in Great Rollright and met some lovely local people interested in the fruits of the landscape! We had a great afternoon despite the somewhat threatening weather – but during the short spurts of rain we sheltered in the woods and exchanged foraging experiences. Some were seasoned experts who had come to share ideas and learn from each other, others had never eaten food straight from the wild in their lives, prior to that Saturday. I provided a tasting session with some stashed away goodies from medlar jelly to sloe gin & elderflower cocktails and nettle soup, and we found some clover flowers & jack-by-the-hedge to pepper our salad. Aside from the fact that we raised £140 in donations to Tearfund, perhaps the biggest success from the workshop was the forming of a new local foraging ‘club’. I’m very excited to hear about their future forages. And I’m so pleased that something like that would form through bringing together local people with this perhaps slightly unusual interest. Watch out hedgerows!
A big thanks to Henry Fothergill for creating this wonderful short film, and also to Hannah Walker for taking some great photos of the afternoon.
