Elizabeth's Cafe, Lille

It makes sense, for the duration of a very cold weekend away visiting a very good friend, to spend most of your time in cafés. I advocate this sort of behaviour. Hot chocolate & catching up on stories, moans, worries & laughter. For me, cafés mark life’s little pauses for reflection or relaxation, inspiration or peace. Equally a place to touch base with life, or to escape from it.

Elizabeth's Cafe, Lille

My friend Rachael & I have always favoured cafés as meeting places, and while at university managed to meet almost every single week for tea & life-talks. Which is why I made an effort to go all the way from La Rochelle to Lille (well, and eventually to Cambrai where she’s working) for the weekend to catch up a bit! Here are a few of the places I went to during the weekend.

Elizabeth's Cafe Lille

The first – a gorgeous little English-teashop-style place in the heart of Lille. We loved the cute array of cakes & teas, and the wooden interior, it was so cosy! Perfect, as I’m a little rough-and-ready in the picture above, recovering from a lack of sleep in a grungy Paris hostel…

Cambrai Cafe

After a nice walk along the canal, we were relieved to find somewhere for hot chocolate in Cambrai centre on the Sunday. Even the camera is steamed up here…. so cold! I quite like the effect though, might try this one again! I came back to this cafe on the Monday morning on my own before my train, to do a little drawing before I left! Still need to assemble my scrapbook pages though before I publish that…

  Cambrai Cafe
The menu on the wall featured typical Northern-French dishes, labelled with “ch’ti” referring to the local dialect idiosyncrasy! “Mini Welsh” is apparently referring to Welsh rarebit, which is a popular thing to eat in Northern France.
Gare du Nord Cafe
Finally, here was my much-welcomed breakfast outside Gare du Nord. As you saw from my last post, I was happy to be able to do some drawing & relax for an hour or so before my train, reflecting on the funny experience of interrupted plans.
